HSE appoints Schal to deliver CDM training
5 October 2010
Schal, the Management arm of TPS (part of Carillion plc), has been engaged by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to assist its Construction Division in training HSE inspectors on Construction Design Management this October.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE), the regulatory authority responsible for enforcing health and safety standards arising out of work activities, has appointed Schal’s specialist Construction Design Management Coordination (CDM-C) Team to assist HSE inspectors in gaining a better understanding of the role of the CDM Co-ordinator.
In addition, inspectors in the HSE’s construction division will have the opportunity to learn how the CDM Co-ordinator role is delivered, broadening their understanding of the application of the CDM regulations when dealing with Duty Holders.
“This inclusive approach by the HSE should really re-energise the CDM Regulations as well as the wider approach to health and safety management on construction sites,” commented Schal’s CDM-C Services Manager, Andrew Hughes. “We look forward to helping the HSE work towards its zero accident target.”
“The HSE’s radical decision to engage directly with CDM-Cs who have a day-to-day working knowledge of the current Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and the accompanying Approved Code of Practice is a great step forward for the industry,” acknowledged Jim Anderson, General Manager for Schal CDM-C business.
As the leading CDM Co-ordinator within the construction industry, Schal has previously contributed to the HSE by helping to shape the enforcing authority’s approach to CDM having worked with the HSE throughout 2009 by assisting in the production of guidance & information published by the HSE for the CDM Duty Holders.
Other notable projects on which Schal has had a role as the CDM Co-ordinator include:
The Media Hub for the Olympics Development Agency, Regional Prime Central for the Ministry of Defence, Framework partner for the Houses of Parliament, New campus development for Westminster University, BsFs, Maggie Centre at Charing Cross.
Joan Murray, Schal’s Group Director commented: “When you look at Schal’s track record, the high level of competence the company demands from all of our team members and our involvement with such a vast range of projects with budgets ranging from £10,000 to £2bn, we believe Schal is ideally placed to provide the HSE with the necessary expertise it needs to develop a complete understanding the role of a working CDM Co-ordinator in construction today. We are delighted to assist the HSE in whatever way we can.”
- Schal first established its specialist CDM-C Team in 1995, in order to ensure full compliance with the first set of CDM Regulations, which became legal requirements.
