Schal Sustainability Group Manager Richard Johnson’s efforts in working towards a sustainable future have been acknowledged, with the presentation of the ‘G4C Champion Award’.
Richard initially won the regional 2010 G4C (Generation for Change) London and South East award in June 2010, and has since gone on to win the National Constructing Excellence ‘G4C Champion Award’ in November 2010.
The G4C Award is open to anyone with less than five years’ industry experience and is presented to the individual recognised as making the most significant contribution to the Construction Industry.
Frank Huidobro, Managing Director of TPS, explains: “Such recognition by our industry is a wonderful achievement and acknowledgement of Richard’s competence and ability. Since Richard joined TPS in January 2008 he has been an excellent ambassador in promoting Sustainability, in terms of BREEAM, Carbon Foot Printing and Environmental Benchmarking to name a few. This is exactly the type of approach we wish to promote both within TPS and in the wider marketplace.”
Richard joined Schal (part of TPS, a Carillion company), after completing a Masters degree in Environmental Technology at Imperial College London. He has since had a huge impact both within and outside the company in his short time in the construction consultancy industry.
Richard quickly picked up the business approach by becoming a trained BREEAM Assessor, and has worked across a broad spectrum of projects within the built environment during his time with TPS / Schal, from education and retail to healthcare.
He has proved to be particularly adept at aiding design professionals with making improvements to the environmental performance of a building without compromising the program and budgetary requirements.
He has also gained recognition for his engaging style, knowledgeable approach and practical support.
“Richard has shown himself to be versatile having built upon an extensive pre-existing knowledge of current environmental issues, from climate change to sustainable waste management. As well as having a good understanding of the relationship between policy decisions and scientific solutions, Richard demonstrates a willingness to understand and engage with clients,” explains Huidobro.
“This is exemplified by his delivery of client engagement sessions during a Carillion Essex BSF bid in July 2009. His openness and simple approach helped engage school children from 8-10 years old in the importance of a sustainable future.”
In a separate role Richard has also been calculating the carbon footprint of TPS Consult. He has spearheaded a business case for carbon reduction at TPS and implemented a number of measures that have reduced both carbon emissions and the overhead costs of the company as a whole.
This is a continuing responsibility for Richard and one which Schal Sustainability now offers to external clients as a service.
Richard has risen from a consultant role, through to Sustainability Group Manager where he now oversees seventeen live BREEAM assessments involving an estimated fifty professional designers for the new fast-growing consultancy arm of Schal.
